Gurukul Sangeetalaya offers training mainly in Indian Classical and Semi Classical Music – Vocals and in instruments like Harmonium, Tabla, Flute and Violin. The institute also offers Voice Culture training. The Institute was founded by Dr. Debranjan Giri ( D.Muse from B.H.U.) and Dr. Sweta Chakraborty ( D.Muse from B.H.U.) a decade ago with an aspiration of encouraging and promoting Indian Classical and Semi Classical styles of Music. They are both actively involved in this field as independent artists and as teachers. They share a similar passion for teaching as they do for performing. They have both learnt mainly from Benares Gharana and Gwalior Gharana, and are inspired by Pandit Balwant Rao Bhatt ‘Bhavrang’ and Pandit. Omkarnath Thakur, who are both well known for their valuable contributions in Hindustani Music. This institute is to take forward the culturally rich history and legacy of Hindustani Music and spread the knowledge and love for it.
The institute offers training for people from all age groups irrespective of having or not having a background in Music. All the courses are offered for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels. The courses can also be tailor-made to suit the specific needs and motivations of the learner. Apart from Indian Classical Music, in Semi Classical, courses in different forms like Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, Chaiti, Hori, Jhula, Tappa, Rasiya, Tarana, Chaturang, Trivat, Ghazal, Geet, Bhajan, Sufi, Folk are also offered. Apart from these, Filmy songs and training for Karaoke Singing is also provided. Voice Culture training is also provided. Instruments are taught in ‘Gayaki’ style. The institute also prepares students for examinations held by Gandharva Mahavidyalaya which is an accredited institution that gives valid Certification in Performing Arts.
The timings and the days of classes are flexible and can be co-ordinated according to each student’s availability and preference and the slots available. The sessions can be in groups or on one to one basis. Currently, there are about 150 students learning with Gurukul Sangeetalaya. New admissions are taken all year round. The Institute is open to and welcomes everyone who wishes to pursue Music and is willing to put in the time and effort required to do so.
The Gurukul looks forward to restore our classical music culture and pass it on to the young budding talents. SangeetGurukul is known for its homely style of teaching. Our main motto is to inculcate the knowledge of Indian classical music that we have inherited from our Gurus to rising talents. Not only kids but people of all age groups are attracted to our ways of teaching. Students absorb music not only through direct sessions but also through environment we maintain. We have our own teaching style.
